Sports Analytics: The Lakers

Some information about the Lakers

The Lakers are a Los Angeles based basketball team. They are a member of the Pacific Division of the Western Conference in the National Basketball Association. The Lakers are currently ranked in 5th place in the Western Conference. They have won 17 championships, making them the team with the 2nd most championship wins in the NBA (beat out only by the Boston Celtics with 18 championship wins).

This season, the Lakers have a record of 24-14, which means they have won 63.2% of the games they’ve played this season. This also puts them in the 5th seed in the Western Conference. This season, the team has the 7th-highest points per game (PPG) in the NBA, scoring an average of 116.5 PPG. Their opponents have a PPG of 116.4, making the odds incredibly close. They are currently on pace to do better than they did last season, as last season, through 38 games, they had a record of 21-17. They ended the season 50-32. So as long as the team keeps up their play through the rest of the season, we will end with a better record than last year. Of course, this depends on the schedule we have for the rest of the season (the teams we play, how many back-to-backs we have, and the injuries we have), but we are on a good pace so far.

The greatest strength of the Lakers is their star players: LeBron James, Luka Dončić, and Austin Reaves, with great offense skills. However, they lack good defense skills and have many useless players.

Performance of Luka Dončić in the Lakers vs Mavericks

Luka Dončić was traded from the Dallas Mavericks to the Los Angeles Lakers surprisingly. On February 2nd, 2025 this trade occurred and was a very huge deal. Luka was traded for Anthony Davis by Nico Harrison as he thought Davis would improve the chances of the Mavericks winning a championship. He believed this due to Luka’s lack of defensive skills and recurring injuries.

This trade received an immense amount of backlash on the internet and is known as “the worst trade in sports history” (The Smoking Cuban 2025). As part of the Los Angeles Lakers, Luka is now doing much better than he was with the Mavericks. Now, he is a prominent leader for the Lakers leading in scoring. Unfortunately for the Mavericks, they are struggling without Luka. After experiencing multiple injuries, Davis has had to miss 40 out of 71 games- leaving the Mavericks in a tough situation.

The Lakers are a Western Conference contender with stronger offense than defense. With a 24-14 record in the top 10. fans and analysts may want to understand why the team is winning, where they are vulnerable, and how individual players contribute in different situations.

From this information, you can see that the Lakers performance increased with Luka while the Mavericks decreased based on their cumulative wins. Along with this, you can see a difference in Luka’s salary now with the Lakers. He is being paid more than his contract with the Mavericks. The statistics show the difference between the data from a regular season versus his career.

These data visualization examples help many understand and compare Luka’s performance. I think that side by side comparisons of his performance in the Lakers versus Mavericks could be improved. It would be interesting to see a radar chart to graph out specific skills over time and show his strengths and weaknesses over time.

A momentum graph that acted as a slider for an individual to drag and see Luka’s performance over time would be very interactive. I think that by dragging through different seasons and highlighting key metrics and the team he was playing on would make it very easy to understand while also engaging the users.
